Physics 12: Acceleration of Proton in B-Field

AI Thread Summary
A proton is accelerated from rest through a potential difference of 2000 V between two charged parallel plates and then enters a uniform magnetic field of 0.50 T. To find the proton's acceleration, the final velocity after leaving the plates must first be calculated using energy principles. The linear acceleration between the plates can be determined using the equation a = v^2/2d, although the distance d is not provided. Additionally, the centripetal acceleration in the magnetic field can be calculated using the formula F = qvB. Understanding both types of acceleration is crucial for solving the problem effectively.

Homework Statement

[/B]
A proton is accelerated from rest at the positive plate of two charged parallel plates with a potential difference of 2000 v. After leaving the plates through a small hole in the negative plate, it enters a uniform magnetic field of 0.50 T in a direction perpendicular to the magnetic field directed out the page as shown in the diagram. Find the acceleration of the proton.

Homework Equations

a=v^2/2d

The Attempt at a Solution

I tried to use the equation above but I don't have d and don't know how to find it. should I use f=ma?

F = qvB also helps.

There are two accelerations in this problem.
The linear one, between the plates.
To find this one you must find first the final velocity. Use energy to do that.

The centripetal one. In the magnetic field. Do find this use F=qvB sin(theta).

Thread 'Collision of a bullet on a rod-string system: query'
In this question, I have a question. I am NOT trying to solve it, but it is just a conceptual question. Consider the point on the rod, which connects the string and the rod. My question: just before and after the collision, is ANGULAR momentum CONSERVED about this point? Lets call the point which connects the string and rod as P. Why am I asking this? : it is clear from the scenario that the point of concern, which connects the string and the rod, moves in a circular path due to the string...
