AI Thread Summary
A football kicked at a 50-degree angle travels 20 meters before hitting the ground, with an initial speed of 14.1 m/s, a flight time of 2.2 seconds, and a maximum height of 5.94 meters. The discussion highlights the independence of the x and y components of motion, suggesting the use of equations for both components to solve for velocities. It emphasizes the relationship between initial vertical and horizontal velocities through the tangent of the angle. Participants express challenges in understanding how to derive the velocities from the given information. The conversation aims to clarify the problem-solving process for projectile motion.

A football is kicked at an angle of 50 degrees and travels a distance of 20 m before hitting the ground.

What is the initial speed of the ball? (14.1 m/s)
How long is it in flight? (2.2 sec)
How high does it rise? (5.94 m)

I have the answers but I don't know where to go with the information that is given. If anyone could help explain this problem, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

difficulty level: 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001

hint:
1. the x and y components are independent.
2. write down the equation for x and y component (the final v_y is -v_y)
3. the initial V_y and V_x are related by tan(theta)
4. you have 3 eq 3 unkn (v_x,v_y,t)... solve it

alrighty..i think i understand what your saying. Thanks! I just have problems understanding how to get the velocities. Thanks again!

TL;DR Summary: I came across this question from a Sri Lankan A-level textbook. Question - An ice cube with a length of 10 cm is immersed in water at 0 °C. An observer observes the ice cube from the water, and it seems to be 7.75 cm long. If the refractive index of water is 4/3, find the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. I could not understand how the apparent height of the ice cube in the water depends on the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. Does anyone have an...
Thread 'Variable mass system : water sprayed into a moving container'
Starting with the mass considerations #m(t)# is mass of water #M_{c}# mass of container and #M(t)# mass of total system $$M(t) = M_{C} + m(t)$$ $$\Rightarrow \frac{dM(t)}{dt} = \frac{dm(t)}{dt}$$ $$P_i = Mv + u \, dm$$ $$P_f = (M + dm)(v + dv)$$ $$\Delta P = M \, dv + (v - u) \, dm$$ $$F = \frac{dP}{dt} = M \frac{dv}{dt} + (v - u) \frac{dm}{dt}$$ $$F = u \frac{dm}{dt} = \rho A u^2$$ from conservation of momentum , the cannon recoils with the same force which it applies. $$\quad \frac{dm}{dt}...
