Question about the fabric of space

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the nature of space expansion, particularly in relation to the Big Bang. Participants explore various analogies to conceptualize how space might be expanding, including comparisons to balloons and pudding. The scope includes conceptual understanding and analogical reasoning.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant suggests that space could be expanding due to momentum from the Big Bang, likening it to a balloon being filled with gas or liquid.
  • Another analogy proposed is that space expands like a pinhole in a balloon, where the hole grows larger from a specific point.
  • A further analogy compares matter and space to pudding on a flat tabletop, suggesting that it would eventually flatten out and stagnate in movement.
  • Another participant cautions against the use of analogies without a deeper understanding of cosmology and recommends a specific resource for further reading.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus, as there are multiple analogies and interpretations presented without agreement on their validity or implications.

Contextual Notes

Some limitations include the potential oversimplification of complex cosmological concepts through analogies and the lack of deeper cosmological knowledge among participants.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in cosmology, space expansion, and conceptual analogies in physics may find this discussion relevant.

Forewarned, I'm super layman.

Anyways, I've been wondering this all day from the thought of liquids needing less heat to boil under less atmosphere. Don't panic, i haven't JUST learned this, it just has provoked a thought. Is space expanding because of the momentum brought by the big bang, like a balloon being filled up with gas or liquid? Or is it expanding as if you poked a pin in that balloon and the hole grows bigger, from that pin point ,without control.
Is it possible that matter and space is like pudding on a flat tabletop, you pore it on the table and it will eventually flatten out fully and stagnate in movement.

Without a deeper understanding and knowledge of cosmology one must be very careful in the use of analogies. You may benefit from reading the balloon analogy sticky in the cosmology forum (the first thread, top of the page).
