Real Object, Images formed by a single converging or diverging lens

AI Thread Summary
A discussion on the formation of images by single lenses highlights key truths about converging and diverging lenses. A converging lens can create a virtual, upright, enlarged image when the object is placed between the focal point and the lens, while it cannot produce a real, inverted, reduced image. Diverging lenses, on the other hand, always produce virtual, upright, reduced images and cannot create real images. The confusion arises from the understanding of how these lenses interact with light and the nature of the images they produce. Clarifying these principles is essential for accurately solving related homework problems.

Homework Statement

Starting with a real object, which of the following statements are TRUE about the image formed by a single lens? (Choose ALL correct answers, e.g. B, AC, CDF.)

A) For a converging lens an object has to be placed between the focal length and the lens in order to form a virtual image.
B) A diverging lens can produce a real, inverted, reduced image.
C) A converging lens can produce a virtual, upright, enlarged image.
D) A converging lens cannot produce a real, inverted reduced image.
E) A converging lens can never produce a virtual, upright, reduced image.
F) A diverging lens always produces a virtual, upright, reduced image.

The Attempt at a Solution

I keep getting this wrong, and I'm not sure which one I've mixed up.
A) True - I believe this is the only way to get a virtual image for a converging lens
B) False - Diverging lenses CANT produce real images
C) True - if the object is between the focal point and the lens
D) False - this is possible if the object is placed, say, 2 times the focal length away from the lens
E) True - this is not possible because any virtual images are enlarged ?
F) False - diverging lenses can produce inverted images as well

can someone help me figure out where I'm wrong?
These are the answers I've tried:
TFTFTF
TTTFTF
TFTFTT
TFTFFF

I believe the last one is true. It seems like any raytrace on a diverging lens forms a upright reduced and virtual image.

I guess my prof said that a diverging lens could possibly form an inverted image, although I'm not sure how.

I also already tried that combination: TFTFTT
So I must either have another one wrong or something... not sure...

I find that hard to believe as all virtual images are upright.

I didn't know that all virtual images are upright, that is good to know!

However, if Part F is true, I still have something else wrong, as I tried: TFTFTT

So I'm not sure what other one I have wrong...

Yeah I'm not sure what else could be different TFTFTT seems right to me.

Kindly see the attached pdf. My attempt to solve it, is in it. I'm wondering if my solution is right. My idea is this: At any point of time, the ball may be assumed to be at an incline which is at an angle of θ(kindly see both the pics in the pdf file). The value of θ will continuously change and so will the value of friction. I'm not able to figure out, why my solution is wrong, if it is wrong .
TL;DR Summary: I came across this question from a Sri Lankan A-level textbook. Question - An ice cube with a length of 10 cm is immersed in water at 0 °C. An observer observes the ice cube from the water, and it seems to be 7.75 cm long. If the refractive index of water is 4/3, find the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. I could not understand how the apparent height of the ice cube in the water depends on the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. Does anyone have an...
