Rocket Propulsion - Varying mass

AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around calculating the thrust of a rocket engine, the final mass after fuel consumption, and the final speed attained after a specified burn time. The thrust is determined using the formula Thrust = RUex, resulting in a value based on the exhaust speed and fuel consumption rate. After burning fuel for 250 seconds, the final mass of the rocket is calculated to be 74,000 kg. The final speed attained by the rocket is found to be 2,080 m/s. The calculations emphasize the application of Newton's laws and the relationship between mass flow rate and thrust.

Homework Statement

A rocket at rest in space, where there is virtually no gravitational force, has a mass of 2.55 * 105 kg, of which 1.81*105 kg is fuel. The engine consumes fuel at the rate of 480 kg/s and the xhaust speed is 3.27 m/s. The engine is fired for 250 s.
  1. Find the thrust of the rocket engine?

[*]What is the mass of the rocket after the engine burn?
[*]What is the final speed attained?

Homework Equations

Eq 1: Vf = Vi + Uexln |Mi/Mf|

The Attempt at a Solution

I think I know the first ine
Thrust = RUex
(480*3.27E3)

2 and 3 confuses me

Are they asking about Mass final? Shouldnt I find Vf first?
Mass Initial - 2.55E5
Mass Final after the fuel burns = 7.4E4

The answer for 2 is 1.35 E5 kg, 3 is 2.08E3 m/s

Thank you so much! :D

:blushing: I got the answer! o:)

you have got the rate of fuel consumption and removal. just use f = dp/dt (Newton's original law)

Kindly see the attached pdf. My attempt to solve it, is in it. I'm wondering if my solution is right. My idea is this: At any point of time, the ball may be assumed to be at an incline which is at an angle of θ(kindly see both the pics in the pdf file). The value of θ will continuously change and so will the value of friction. I'm not able to figure out, why my solution is wrong, if it is wrong .
TL;DR Summary: I came across this question from a Sri Lankan A-level textbook. Question - An ice cube with a length of 10 cm is immersed in water at 0 °C. An observer observes the ice cube from the water, and it seems to be 7.75 cm long. If the refractive index of water is 4/3, find the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. I could not understand how the apparent height of the ice cube in the water depends on the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. Does anyone have an...
