AI Thread Summary
A trailer tying ring rated for over 1000 pounds was installed from a roof truss in a storage unit to create a boat motor lifting system, which functioned effectively with a block and tackle. Concerns were raised about the reduced holding capacity due to the vertical attachment of the ring, relying on two 3/8" lag bolts with a backup plate. Participants suggested calculating the strength of the bolts and provided resources for further information on lag screw calculations and bolt strength. There was a cautionary note regarding the owner's permission for modifications in the storage unit. The discussion concluded with a recommendation to consider safer alternatives like renting or purchasing a motor lift.

I recently attached a trailer tying ring (3 1/2" x 3 1/2" d-ring with loop pressed into the hardware mounting plate) from a roof truss in a storage unit. The ring is rated for 1000+ pounds. My purpose was a boat motor lifting system. It worked great with an attached block and tackle and was effortless. Since I attached the ring system vertically to a roof truss stud, the ring holding rating capacity may be lower since the weight is now suspended by two 3/8" lag bolts that are attached with a backup plate and compression on the 2 x 4. Can someone give me a reference for calculating the holding power of such a system? Thank you.

Welcome to the PF.

Does the owner of the storage unit know you are doing this? You should consider just renting or buying a motor lift instead -- that would be much less risky. Thread is closed.

Thread 'Physics of Stretch: What pressure does a band apply on a cylinder?'
Scenario 1 (figure 1) A continuous loop of elastic material is stretched around two metal bars. The top bar is attached to a load cell that reads force. The lower bar can be moved downwards to stretch the elastic material. The lower bar is moved downwards until the two bars are 1190mm apart, stretching the elastic material. The bars are 5mm thick, so the total internal loop length is 1200mm (1190mm + 5mm + 5mm). At this level of stretch, the load cell reads 45N tensile force. Key numbers...
I'm trying to decide what size and type of galvanized steel I need for 2 cantilever extensions. The cantilever is 5 ft. The space between the two cantilever arms is a 17 ft Gap the center 7 ft of the 17 ft Gap we'll need to Bear approximately 17,000 lb spread evenly from the front of the cantilever to the back of the cantilever over 5 ft. I will put support beams across these cantilever arms to support the load evenly
