Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around finding a keyboard shortcut or method to type the letter "I" with a tilde (˜) on top, specifically in the context of MacOS. Participants explore various approaches and tools available on the operating system to achieve this character, touching on aspects of notation used in physics and mathematics.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant seeks a keyboard shortcut for typing "I" with a tilde on MacOS, noting that the option+n shortcut does not work for this character.
  • Another participant suggests that the notation may relate to vector notation in LaTeX, prompting a clarification about the specific character needed.
  • A participant provides an example of the tilde character in use, referencing the word "mañana" to illustrate the tilde's application.
  • It is noted that while the MacOS "Character Viewer" includes the tilde-I character, the US-English keyboard layout does not support typing it directly.
  • One participant mentions finding the character through the Character Viewer and expresses a desire for a simpler method, given its infrequent use.
  • A suggestion is made regarding Unicode input methods on MacOS, although the relevance of the specific Unicode value is uncertain.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the difficulty of typing the character directly on MacOS and share various methods to achieve it. However, there is no consensus on a single, straightforward solution.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the dependency on keyboard layouts and the availability of specific characters in the Character Viewer. The discussion does not resolve the challenge of typing the character directly from the keyboard.

Who May Find This Useful

This discussion may be useful for MacOS users, particularly those in academic or professional settings involving physics or mathematics, who need to type specialized characters.

As the title says, I'm looking for a keyboard shortcut to type

"I" with a ˜

The option+n shortcut does not work for I or V on MacOS.

Thanks!

Do you mean like vector notation in LaTeX?

As in ma##\tilde{n}##ana?

Here is how it appears in the edit window.

As in ma##\tilde{n}##ana?

Doesn't appear to be the same as LaTeX; it is the sign above the "n" in mañana. My professor uses this notation and I wanted to know how to reproduce it on my computer.

I'm trying to make the sign above the letter I just using the keyboard on mac (not using the edit window). For example, to write ñ you just type:

"option+n" then the letter "n"

But this does not work for I (or V).

Thanks for your responses.

The MacOS "Character Viewer" (underneath the flag icon in my menu bar) does show tilde-I among the supported characters. Let's see what happens when I try to paste it in below:

Ĩ

OK, I see it.

I can't type it directly because the US-English keyboard layout doesn't include it. I don't know which language keyboard would include it.

That's the one, thanks!

I wish there was an easier way but that will do since it is pretty rare I need to type this.
