AI Thread Summary
Alternatives to mercury seals for high RPM generators include carbon seals and magnetic oil rotary shaft seals, which are suitable for vacuum applications. For electrical connections to the rotating shaft, mercury-wetted slip rings from Mercotac are recommended. FLOWSERVE's Byron-Jackson Type H motors utilize mercury seals for deep water well applications, suggesting they may have relevant insights. It is advisable to contact FLOWSERVE for further information on their sealing solutions. Exploring these options can help establish effective rotor-stator contact in high RPM generator designs.

Hi,

While designing a high RPM generator i need some information on mercury seal. Actually i want to establish contact between rotor(25k to 30k RPM) and stator. Anybody can suggest me any other alternatives.

I can't say I have ever heard of a mercury seal. How about some kind of carbon seal?

If you want to seal the rotating shaft (eg passing into a vacuum) you can use magnetic oil rotary shaft seals, all the usual vacuum system makers sell them.

If you mean to pass electrical connections to the shaft, mercotac make mercury wetted slip rings.

Submersible Motor Seal

FLOWSERVE uses a mercury seal in its Byron-Jackson Type H motors. The motor is for deep water well applications. You may want to contact FLOWSERVE for more information.

I'm trying to decide what size and type of galvanized steel I need for 2 cantilever extensions. The cantilever is 5 ft. The space between the two cantilever arms is a 17 ft Gap the center 7 ft of the 17 ft Gap we'll need to Bear approximately 17,000 lb spread evenly from the front of the cantilever to the back of the cantilever over 5 ft. I will put support beams across these cantilever arms to support the load evenly
Thread 'What's the most likely cause for this carbon seal crack?'
We have a molded carbon graphite seal that is used in an inline axial piston, variable displacement hydraulic pump. One of our customers reported that, when using the “A” parts in the past, they only needed to replace them due to normal wear. However, after switching to our parts, the replacement cycle seems to be much shorter due to “broken” or “cracked” failures. This issue was identified after hydraulic fluid leakage was observed. According to their records, the same problem has occurred...
