AI Thread Summary
A very large Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) striking Earth could lead to severe disruptions in technology and infrastructure. Symptoms of such an event might include widespread power outages, damage to satellites, and disruptions in communication systems. A CME of this magnitude could potentially disrupt the Earth's magnetic field, although it is unlikely to completely reverse it. The hypothesis that CMEs could be responsible for the historical reversals of the Earth's magnetic polarity lacks substantial evidence and remains speculative. Further research is needed to understand the relationship between CMEs and magnetic field changes.

What would be the symptoms if a very large Coronal Mass Ejection struck the Earth? (I mean much stronger than anything we've observed)

Would it be possible for such a CME to completely disrupt the Earth's magnetic field?

I'm curious, because a random thought struck me while reading National Geographic (yes, a real hot bed of scientific fact I know :-p) -- that CMEs might be responsible for the reversal of polarity of the Earth's magnetic field. I didn't know where to look, though, to reject this hypothesis (or support it, if the case may be).

Thread 'The Secrets of Prof. Verschure's Rosetta Stones'
(Edit: since the thread title was changed, this first sentence is too cryptic: the original title referred to a Tool song....) Besides being a favorite song by a favorite band, the thread title is a straightforward play on words. This summer, as a present to myself for being promoted, I purchased a collection of thin sections that I believe comprise the research materials of Prof. Rob Verschure, who at the time was faculty in the Geological Institute in Amsterdam. What changed this...
