Relativity What is Field Theory and How Can I Build a Strong Foundation in the Subject?

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the challenges of learning Field Theory using Landau's book, which is considered difficult for beginners. The user seeks recommendations for introductory-level texts that provide a solid foundation in Field Theory, emphasizing the need for clear writing and detailed derivations of key concepts like Action and important tensors. A specific book is highlighted as a preferred resource. Additionally, the user mentions their interest in other texts for electrodynamics, referencing two additional books that they find valuable alongside Landau and Lifshitz's volume. The overall goal is to build a stronger understanding of the subject before revisiting Landau's work for deeper insights.

Hello.

In my university the course of the Field theory was based on Landau's book, which of course, is a quiet rough book to introduce a subject with - so all I was left with was superficial knowledge of the branch. I would like to read another book (introductory level is preferred) about the subject to gain much stronger basic knowledge about the Field theory and then to use it as a foundation to re-read Landau's book to get a deeper insight in the theory. The book which contains very detailed derivation of Action, important tensors and etc. is just perfect.

Thank you very much! Seems to be a nice book. Any other suggestions?

By looking around, it seems like Dr. Hassani's books are great for studying "mathematical methods for the physicist/engineer." One is for the beginner physicist [Mathematical Methods: For Students of Physics and Related Fields] and the other is [Mathematical Physics: A Modern Introduction to Its Foundations] for the advanced undergraduate / grad student. I'm a sophomore undergrad and I have taken up the standard calculus sequence (~3sems) and ODEs. I want to self study ahead in mathematics...
