Work related problem: Yield strength as well as max load

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on calculating the yield strength and maximum load capacity for a steel bracket mounted on a wooden street pole. The user seeks equations and methods to analyze stress and potential weaknesses, particularly under various wind loads. Participants question the feasibility of the project, emphasizing the need for clarity on the mounting method and the load's implications for safety. They also highlight the importance of providing a diagram and a detailed explanation of the intended analysis. The conversation suggests that a deeper understanding of mechanical analysis is necessary for accurate calculations.

TL;DR Summary
Yield Strength value as well as maximum load capacity. Need equations and possibly a break down on how to solve the issue.
Summary: Yield Strength value as well as maximum load capacity. Need equations and possibly a break down on how to solve the issue.

So let's say I have a Wooden Street pole and I want to mount a steel bracket using metal bands to the street pole. The bracket will be mounted to the beam using 4 steel bolts with washers. The bracket will have a perpendicular steel beam attached. I'm looking to measure the max load capacity the bracket can withstand as well as the yield strength at various load capacities. Analyzing the stress and areas of weaknesses. The load will be various wind speeds. Please include equations on how to determine these results.

Welcome to the PF.

Does the city know that you are going to be mounting something to one of their poles? What kind of load are you wanting to support? What will be below the load in case the support fails (people?).

This is a hypothetical. Nothing will be actually mounted to city poles. The load will need to take into account the beam connected to the bracket as well as high wind speed loads.

It sure sounds more than hypothetical with exactly 4 bolts.

It is also self-contradictory. It says the bracket is mounted with bolts, and that it is mounted with bands. Which is it?

If you are expecting equations so that you can plug numbers into a formula and calculate an answer on a calculator, then your understanding of mechanical analysis is not good enough.

How about you just tell us what you are trying to accomplish and see if we can help?

If it is homework, then it should be posted on a homework forum and you need to show us your work.

Please provide a diagram showing what you think the forces/loads/reactions might be on your purposed structure; and we will then go from there.

I'm trying to decide what size and type of galvanized steel I need for 2 cantilever extensions. The cantilever is 5 ft. The space between the two cantilever arms is a 17 ft Gap the center 7 ft of the 17 ft Gap we'll need to Bear approximately 17,000 lb spread evenly from the front of the cantilever to the back of the cantilever over 5 ft. I will put support beams across these cantilever arms to support the load evenly
Thread 'What's the most likely cause for this carbon seal crack?'
We have a molded carbon graphite seal that is used in an inline axial piston, variable displacement hydraulic pump. One of our customers reported that, when using the “A” parts in the past, they only needed to replace them due to normal wear. However, after switching to our parts, the replacement cycle seems to be much shorter due to “broken” or “cracked” failures. This issue was identified after hydraulic fluid leakage was observed. According to their records, the same problem has occurred...
