The Panama Papers (Spanish: Papeles de Panamá) are 2.6TB of data or 11.5 million leaked documents that detail financial and attorney–client information for more than 214,488 offshore entities leaked beginning on 3 April 2016. The documents, some dating back to the 1970s, were created by, and taken from, former Panamanian law firm and corporate service provider Mossack Fonseca. The documents contain personal financial information about wealthy individuals and public officials that had previously been kept private. The publication of these documents made possible to establish the prosecution of Jan Marsalek, who is still of interest to a number of European governments due to his revealed links with Russian intelligence and international financial fraudsters David and Josh Baazov. While offshore business entities are legal (see Offshore Magic Circle), reporters found that some of the Mossack Fonseca shell corporations were used for illegal purposes, including fraud, tax evasion, and evading international sanctions."John Doe", the whistleblower who leaked the documents to German journalist Bastian Obermayer from the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ), remains anonymous, even to the journalists who worked on the investigation. "My life is in danger", the whistleblower told them. In a May 6, 2016 statement, John Doe cited income inequality as the reason for the action and said they leaked the documents "simply because I understood enough about their contents to realize the scale of the injustices they described". Doe added that they had never worked for any government or intelligence agency and expressed willingness to help prosecutors if granted immunity from prosecution. After SZ verified that the statement did in fact come from the source for the Panama Papers, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) posted the full document on its website.SZ asked the ICIJ for help because of the amount of data involved. Journalists from 107 media organizations in 80 countries analyzed documents detailing the operations of the law firm. After more than a year of analysis, the first news stories were published on April 3, 2016, along with 150 of the documents themselves. The project represents an important milestone in the use of data journalism software tools and mobile collaboration.
The documents were dubbed the Panama Papers because of the country they were leaked from, but the Panamanian government expressed strong objections to the name over concerns that it would tarnish the government's and country's image worldwide, as did other entities in Panama and elsewhere. Some media outlets covering the story have used the name "Mossack Fonseca papers".In October 2020, German authorities issued an international arrest warrant for the two founders of the law firm at the core of the tax evasion scandal exposed by the Panama Papers. Cologne prosecutors are seeking German-born Jürgen Mossack and Panamanian Ramón Fonseca on charges of accessory to tax evasion and forming a criminal organization.
Do papers done without the math get approved? I've got some ideas about how the universe works but I've just focused on intuitively understanding how GR works and never got interested in the math end until now that I'm finished. Or should I just focus on that part now?
I feel compelled to note a valuable new article in the magazine Science about the task of writing scientific papers in English when your native language is not English. The article is written by a Chinese scientist who did his PhD in the U.K.
The basic message is to keep it simple. Use short...
I am looking for more books like this one: https://archive.org/details/MethodOfCoordinateslittleMathematicsLibrary

So, in a rare instance I actually read APS News, I came across “New Experiment Suggests Imaginary Numbers Must be Part of Real Quantum Physics.” In November 2022, Volume 31, Number 10.
Since complex numbers are isomorphic to a real 2x2 matrix algebra, I was confused how such a claim can be...
I know there have been a number of previous threads discussing the work of Pavel Kroupa, and this work has generally been categorized as far out of mainstream because it deals with his views on alternative gravity theories and so forth. However, I have come across two of his papers that describe...
It was not what I thought it would be, but I do observe such bias in papers/journals I read, and it is only part of the problem.
Researchers find citation bias in published papers and evidence that the problem is getting worse...
I'm a PhD student in high-energy theory and this is one point I have been struggling with for a while. When I study a paper what is the most efficient way to do so? For example, should I try to rederive everything following the author's reasoning? Should I try to take notes, and if so how to...
I found an interesting list of "must-read" papers in the field of general relativity compiled by Emanuele Berti:
https://pages.jh.edu/eberti2/posts/must-read-paper-list/
Are there any notable exceptions, or other "classic" papers that - in your view - every relativist ought to have read?
Hi,new college guy here,previewing next year's work.
Been seeing these articles, written by reputed physicists.

I'm sure y'all have seen plenty weirder. What're your favorite papers with silly titles? Here's one of mine: Snakes on a Spaceship--An Overview of Python in Heliophysics.
Usually in papers there are many plots, and sometimes I do not understand how they plot them, with which kind of software or program they are plotted. I just attached three of the plots, I would be very thankful if you guide me, any of them is plotted with using which method, software or...
Hello. I am sorry for asking these questions but could an undergraduate student in math like me make efforts on topics and make or publish papers? As well, could an undegraduate student make not top rated or top class papers but low or average rated papers? What your advice would be on those...
First of all, I want to know what research papers are called in Mathematicians' jargon.
Second, I want to know if there is a place on web where I can find all the work done in math by all the mathematicians. Thanks.
Hi everyone!
We launched Connected Papers 7 months ago, with the goal to help researchers visually find and explore academic papers.
Input: a paper of your liking.
Output: a full interactive graph of similar papers to explore.
For example, here is the graph for The Coevolution of Galaxies and...

Need some sources on why PWM is widely used in inverters for DC - AC conversion applications, and their mathematical basis?
Basically, I was wondering why inverters had to use PWM, instead of just getting a square wave of let's say a 50Hz frequency and just filtering out the odd order harmonics...
Studying Einstein's original Die Grundlage der allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie, published in 1916's Annalen Der Physik, I came across some equations which I couldn't verify after doing the computations hinted at.
The first are equations 47b) regarding the gravity contribution to the...
Does anyone know any good up to date books on the mathematics of neural networks? If you know any good research papers that would be cool too. I've read through "Intro to the theory of neural computation" by John Hertz but it's a 1991 book. I'm looking for generalized theorems on...
Hello,
I'm the head of youth scientific club at my High School. Because there's a pandemic going on, schools are closed and god knows when they reopen. Earlier before, I have a couple of programs that are being planned to produce scientific papers but they are all postponed.
Now, all my...
Hey guys, so recently I've been trying to use mathematica to plot graphs for my scientific papers, and I've been starting to wonder - what plot options do you guys use?
How do you plot your graphs in mathematica such that they look presentable in a scientific paper?
I want to understand most physics papers, but I don't have much time to learn every Math subject.
When I was in college, I only took Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Statistics. I can't understand many Physics papers that interest me.
Greeting, I wanted some suggestion regarding classic and essential papers to read in Classical Mechanics. The first semester is over, and I want to expand upon what I have learnt. If there is some paper or topic in particular that you found interesting personally early on, it would be helpful. I...
Hello,
Is it possible to read the original, ground-breaking, pioneering papers of Quantum Mechanics - the papers by Max Planck, Niels Bohr, Albert Einstein, Louis De Brogile et al? In the form of electronic copy or a pdf format? I suppose the original 'copyrights' have expired and they should...
I recently looked at a transcript of a 1991 interview of Hans Bethe, where he recalled the suggestion that an atomic bomb could ignite the air.
"Teller at Los Alamos put a very good calculator on this problem, [Emil] Konopinski, who was an expert on weak interactors, and Konopinski together...
As someone who is interested in astrophysics, I always get emphasized on the importance of knowing statistics and error analysis in results of a calculation. However when I read about real physics papers, I never see any numerical solutions, just equations that demonstrate phenomena. I know that...
Avoid large groups to be a disruptive scientist so says an article in Physics World. Big groups are more impactful having more citations than papers with fewer authors, building on current research and concentrating on near term goals.
Hi,
I was wondering of those who might write papers in this field.
What is the convention of units in plasma physics papers, and is this often all screwed around and you have to already understand it to understand it?
I'll give you an example, because I am looking at this paper to understand...
Hello,
I'm a Ph.D. student of Astrophysics and I would like to expand my horizons in this field. The best is probably to read papers around. I don't mean just new ones. But how to effectively find papers from my field when there are so many papers for example at https://arxiv.org/ or...
I want to know more about quantum entanglement and I am a undergrad student in physics. Can someone suggest some research journals or articles to easily understand the concept deeply?
Basically, I'm a Physics/Math MSc student. Currently strengthening my background in Diff. Geo., QFT, GR. I feel like I should start reading some research papers on Quantum Gravity but I do not know where to start.
What papers should I start with? I need papers that are accessible to 2nd year...
I'd like a list of math papers that are useful not for the content but for teaching how to do math, that is, math research papers that teach how to come up with new mathematical ideas.
Is it ok to refer to a papers published by a different academic, or should i mainly be talking about my potential supervisor's published papers in my interview?
thanks
Hello!
I'm very interested in physics, and relatively new to it. I'm doing a degree in Engineering but interested in shifting the Major to physics.
I'm requesting suggestions about scientific paper that EVERY physicist must read in order to get a certain command on the subject. I mean by that...

Most published math papers are answers to open questions posed by the authors of the papers, right? So why is this problem that the paper responds to is never explicit in the text by the authors? Would not that be an important thing since it would save time for other mathematicians not to waste...
Hi all,
I'm working on a school project that requires me to go through a published physics paper. However, there are arguments I couldn't fully follow.
I was wondering if physicists were required to publish some of their "working" for review, and where I might find them.
Thanks!
There are scores of new papers proposing or discussing new Beyond the Standard Model physics theories every week (at arXiv and elsewhere) and unless you have an infinite amount of time you can't read them all in depth.

It seems that most recently published analysis textbooks are written from a more abstract perspective, e.g., dealing with functions on general metric spaces or with spaces of functions. However, often solving a problem requires some "get your hands dirty" classical or "hard" analysis -- for...
I was wondering if someone could help me figure out what a scripted letter in a paper I'm reading is called.
The scripted letter is in equation (3). It looks like some kind of a scripted T.

I am giving an informal talk in my research group and was wondering what are the hottest research papers in phenomenology as of now.
Any help would be great.
