Other How do physicists practically switch fields to non-adjacent subfields?
Well my current PhD and that MSc are nearly orthogonal in details/skills/training involved. On the face value, it would indeed look a little weird (I do have an MSc in physics as well, which could make it a little more unusual?). On the other hand though, experimental/computational plasma...- AryaKimiaghalam

Other How do physicists practically switch fields to non-adjacent subfields?
Thank you for the follow up! I appreciate your time. That's what I have planned as a first test, to talk to companies, people who work there on linkedin and get their thoughts. I can't trust one opinion obviously, so I am planning to cast a wide net with this search. To your last point, my PhD...- AryaKimiaghalam

Other How do physicists practically switch fields to non-adjacent subfields?
Thanks a lot Choppy! I've been doing some reading and searching about what people in the field are doing. Maybe finding mentors in the field is a good idea as well, to get a wider perspective on issues and building connections in the process.- AryaKimiaghalam

Other How do physicists practically switch fields to non-adjacent subfields?
ds Thank you for your comments! I can see why you mentioned that my kind of regret does not bode well. I chose plasma physics primarily due to my personal interest in the type of physics it involves (EM/stat mech and computational physics which I enjoyed more over other subjects). Its recent...- AryaKimiaghalam

Other How do physicists practically switch fields to non-adjacent subfields?
Ultimate goal is to go into industry but a postdoc would be great if it helps with the transition. Edit (typo)- AryaKimiaghalam

Other How do physicists practically switch fields to non-adjacent subfields?
Hi all, Hope you are doing well. I'm a current grad student in applied geophysics and will finish my PhD in about 2 years (previously did a HBSc in Physics, did research in exp. quantum optics). I chose my current field because of its practicality and its clear connection to industry, not out...- AryaKimiaghalam

Graduate Unsolved Problems in Near Surface Geophysics
Hi everyone, In the past when I was doing my undergrad in physics, I sometimes looked at this page for inspiration in research. However, I was unable to find a similar one for applied geophysics. Currently, my area of research is exploration non-seismic geophysics, where the focus is on near...- AryaKimiaghalam

Programs What are some good graduate programs in the Physics of Complex Systems?
Title says it all. I am interested in studying the physics complex systems and nonlinear physics, however i find it very hard to find a good program as it seems this area of study is not the most mainstream of them. I found out about Max Planck but still want to know if there are other strong...- AryaKimiaghalam

Admissions Being Competitive for Top US Graduate Schools
Thanks for the advice. I have already done two semesters of quantum mechanics, but I guess taking a third would ensure I'm more prepared.- AryaKimiaghalam

Admissions Being Competitive for Top US Graduate Schools
Again, I'm not looking to hear "what I like" and you are making that assumption again! That would be pointless. Seeking the advice of more people doesn't mean that you are ignoring the advice of others. I already looked at the graduate curriculum at these schools and it seems that my...- AryaKimiaghalam

Admissions Being Competitive for Top US Graduate Schools
I already have a decent background in quantum and won't be "squashed". The reason why I am not sure about my professor's advice is that this is the first time I am hearing such a thing and need to talk to more people in the field to have a better understanding of the situation. I won't base my...- AryaKimiaghalam
