AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the impact of lipid peroxidation on the stiffness of cell membranes. A participant shares a paper that explores oxidative stiffening of erythrocyte membranes, particularly in sickle cell disease, suggesting that membrane protein oxidation contributes to stiffness. However, it is noted that while lipid peroxidation is destructive, it may not directly cause increased stiffness in lipid components. The inquiry emphasizes the need for further insights or literature on the relationship between lipid peroxidation and membrane stiffness.

Hi Guys,

I am new to this forum and would like to take this chance to say hello to everyone here.

Basically, my question is about the mechanical translation of cell membrane lipid peroxidation. I am wondering if lipid peroxidation has any impact on the stiffness of cell membrane. If so, is there any guideline or judgement of it?

If anybody has read about anything related, please let me know or send me the paper or book.

Thanks in advance,
Feng

Here's a paper re oxidative stiffening of erythrocyte membranes. The authors believe that the stiffening is related to the oxidation of membrane proteins in patients with sickle cell disease. While oxidation of the lipid structure of cell membranes by free radicals is progressive and destructive, I'm not aware that it involves stiffening due to oxidation of lipid components.

The study provides critical new insights into the African Humid Period, a time between 14,500 and 5,000 years ago when the Sahara desert was a green savanna, rich in water bodies that facilitated human habitation and the spread of pastoralism. Later aridification turned this region into the world's largest desert. Due to the extreme aridity of the region today, DNA preservation is poor, making this pioneering ancient DNA study all the more significant. Genomic analyses reveal that the...
