Difference between aeronautical engineering and aerospace engineeering

AI Thread Summary
Aeronautical engineering focuses on the design and development of aircraft within the Earth's atmosphere, while aerospace engineering encompasses both aeronautical and astronautical engineering, covering vehicles that operate both within and beyond the atmosphere. The term "aerospace" reflects advancements in technology and curriculum updates that include high-speed flow dynamics. Aeronautical engineering is often viewed as somewhat outdated compared to the broader scope of aerospace engineering. The distinction is primarily in the scope of study and application, with aerospace engineering being the more modern and inclusive term. Understanding these differences is crucial for students and professionals in the field.

Basically, aeronautical is just somewhat out of date and when they updated the curricula to include things like the dynamics of high speed flow, the name "aerospace" made a little more sense.

Due to the constant never ending supply of "cool stuff" happening in Aerospace these days I'm creating this thread to consolidate posts every time something new comes along. Please feel free to add random information if its relevant. So to start things off here is the SpaceX Dragon launch coming up shortly, I'll be following up afterwards to see how it all goes. https://blogs.nasa.gov/spacex/
