Chemicals that can dissolve or react with carbon particles and alloys like steel

AI Thread Summary
The discussion focuses on finding effective non-polar hydrocarbon solvents that can dissolve carbon particles and tar without damaging steel alloys. Non-polar solvents, such as those found in products like WD-40, brake cleaners, and engine degreasers, are highlighted for their ability to efficiently remove dirt and carbon buildup, particularly from spark plugs after extensive engine use. The conversation emphasizes the importance of selecting a solvent that balances speed and ease of use while ensuring compatibility with metal components. References to specific solvents like Stoddard solvent and mineral oil suggest potential options for achieving effective cleaning without adverse effects on alloys.

Non-poler, hydrocarbon solvents will dissolve tar or other hydrocarbons.

which non polar hydrocarbon suits best for removing dirt containing carbon and petrol with speed ease and efficiency? this is just to remove dirt produced in spark plug of engine after driving for many hours.

I want to test a humidity sensor with one or more saturated salt solutions. The table salt that I have on hand contains one of two anticaking agents, calcium silicate or sodium aluminosilicate. Will the presence of either of these additives (or iodine for that matter) significantly affect the equilibrium humidity? I searched and all the how-to-do-it guides did not address this question. One research paper I found reported that at 1.5% w/w calcium silicate increased the deliquescent point by...
