AI Thread Summary
Severe storms hit West Ryde, NSW, Australia on December 15, 2018, prompting a discussion about photography techniques used to capture the event. The photographer utilized a Canon 6D with a 24-105mm f4 lens, sharing images that showcased impressive color contrasts despite initial concerns about infrared effects. The discussion highlighted the crispness of the photos, particularly noting the vivid colors of elements like a yellow figure, a red house, and green trees against a monochromatic backdrop. The photographer mentioned using Lightroom for minor adjustments, such as pulling up shadows to reveal details in the foliage, while expressing a preference for natural-looking images over heavy processing. The goal was to present the scene as it was visually experienced.

You using infrared.
I see some color, but from the contrast...

just a standard Canon 6D camera with a 24-105mm, f4 lens
which colour are you specifically referring to ?Dave

Well its the crispness of some of your photos that make them stand out as being very good and pleasing to look at.
I guess I was just showing off my un-initiation with photography, say for example the trees are not more whitish as would normally be with IR.
Color - the yellow man, the red house, the green trees bottom right in the last three photos, against as backdrop of shades of lack and white and a bit of blue.
If you didn't ask for it to turn out that way, or if you did, those three photos are impressive to me at least.

These all were touched up a little in Lightroom. If I hadn't, all that bush/trees would have been almost black
I pulled up the shadows a bit so the bush could be seen with some detail

Raw images out of cameras can be a little "flat" looking
A touch of Dehaze, Clarity and Shadow adjustments bring the images up to more like it was visually observed

I hate seeing photos that have been over-processed. I want people to see the scene the way I saw it as I stood thereDave

Thread 'The Secrets of Prof. Verschure's Rosetta Stones'
(Edit: since the thread title was changed, this first sentence is too cryptic: the original title referred to a Tool song....) Besides being a favorite song by a favorite band, the thread title is a straightforward play on words. This summer, as a present to myself for being promoted, I purchased a collection of thin sections that I believe comprise the research materials of Prof. Rob Verschure, who at the time was faculty in the Geological Institute in Amsterdam. What changed this...
These last days, there is a seemingly endless cluster of rather powerful earthquakes close to the islands of Santorini, Amorgos, Anafi, and Ios. Remember, this is a highly volcanically active region, Santorini especially being famous for the supervolcanic eruption which is conjectured to have led to the decline of the Minoan civilization: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minoan_eruption To grasp the scale of what is happening, between the 26th of January and the 9th of February, 12000...
