AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around the Chevrolet Volt and the current state of hybrid and electric vehicles. There's a noticeable increase in advertising for the Volt and electric filling stations, indicating a growing market presence. However, potential buyers express hesitance due to high costs, with some considering regular hybrids instead. Concerns about the value proposition of hybrids are raised, especially when comparing them to older, more efficient models like the VW Rabbit Diesel, which offered better fuel economy and practicality. Additionally, the Aptera is mentioned as a promising vehicle with a potential for over 100 mpg, highlighting ongoing interest in highly efficient transportation options.

No. But I have started seeing ads on tv for it. Also, just today I saw my first tv ad for electric 'filling' stations.

I'll consider a regular hybrid (I may be in the market this coming year), but I'm not real keen on spending $30,000 for a $20,000 car. We'll see what the economics looks like in a couple of years.

Friends with a couple of firms in the city (DC) are leasing a couple dozen of them.

I'm to poor to buy one but I've been seeing them just about every day for the past two months.

I'm not at all impressed with the hybrids currently on the market. You see, back in high school and college we had a VW Rabbit Diesal that got 48 mpg, could carry five adults (four comfortably), and had a decent trunk space.

Then there's the http://www.aptera.com/", a true 100+ mpg vehicle.

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
