AI Thread Summary
The discussion focuses on calculating the work done on a book pushed across a tabletop. The applied force of 2.41 N over a distance of 1.47 m results in 3.54 Joules of work. The opposing friction force of 0.62 N does 0.9084 Joules of work against the motion. The total work done on the book, combining both forces, is 4.4484 Joules. The calculations illustrate the application of the work formula in physics.

Homework Statement

Someone pushes a book a distance 1.47 m along a horizontal tabletop with a horizontal force of 2.41 N, the opposing force of friction is 0.620 N.

How much work does force 2.41 N do on the book?
What is the work done on the book by the friction force?
What is the total work done on the book?

Homework Equations

W = Fscos\phi
W = F * S

The Attempt at a Solution

W
W = 2.63

Edit:
Nvm, I got them all/ :D Just realized it.

Work done by 2.41 N force = 2.41N * 1.47m = 3.54 JoulesWork done by friction force = 0.62N * 1.47m = 0.9084 JoulesTotal work done on the book = 3.54 + 0.9084 = 4.4484 Joules

Thread 'Variable mass system : water sprayed into a moving container'
Starting with the mass considerations #m(t)# is mass of water #M_{c}# mass of container and #M(t)# mass of total system $$M(t) = M_{C} + m(t)$$ $$\Rightarrow \frac{dM(t)}{dt} = \frac{dm(t)}{dt}$$ $$P_i = Mv + u \, dm$$ $$P_f = (M + dm)(v + dv)$$ $$\Delta P = M \, dv + (v - u) \, dm$$ $$F = \frac{dP}{dt} = M \frac{dv}{dt} + (v - u) \frac{dm}{dt}$$ $$F = u \frac{dm}{dt} = \rho A u^2$$ from conservation of momentum , the cannon recoils with the same force which it applies. $$\quad \frac{dm}{dt}...
I was thinking using 2 purple mattress samples, and taping them together, I do want other ideas though, the main guidelines are; Must have a volume LESS than 1600 cubic centimeters, and CAN'T exceed 25 cm in ANY direction. Must be LESS than 1 kg. NO parachutes. NO glue or Tape can touch the egg. MUST be able to take egg out in less than 1 minute. Grade A large eggs will be used.
