AI Thread Summary
A stone is thrown horizontally at 14.0 m/s from a height of 75.7 m, and the discussion focuses on calculating how far it lands from the cliff's base. The method involves calculating the vertical velocity using the formula v = √(2gh) and determining the time taken to fall. Once the time is known, the horizontal distance can be calculated by multiplying the horizontal velocity by the time. There is a brief exchange regarding the meanings of variables g (acceleration due to gravity) and h (height), with some participants emphasizing the importance of self-study. The conversation highlights the need for understanding fundamental concepts in physics.

A stone is thrown horizontally at 14.0 m/s from a cliff 75.7 m high. How far from the base of the cliff does the stone strike the ground?

Hi,

This is how u go about with the problem:

First calculate the vertical velocity of the stone using
v = & radic ;(2*g*h) and then calculate the time taken t for the ball to reach the ground vertically, then using the horizontal velocity that is given to be = 14m/s by using t = 75.7/vand then calculate the horizontal distance traveled by the stone using 14 * t. This the distance traveled by the stone away from the base of the cliff.

hi

what does g and h stand for?

Perhaps you need to spend a little more time studying, and less time on the computer. We do not do your homework for you here. We make every effort to help you learn, some things you simply must learn on your own. This question says, to me, that you have not put much effort into this assignment. Please set down and read you book.

hmmm

ummm...before you talk **** about me, i just want to let you know this isn't my homework. i haven't learned this yet. I am still on acceleration and velocity...so yeah.

Thread 'Variable mass system : water sprayed into a moving container'
Starting with the mass considerations #m(t)# is mass of water #M_{c}# mass of container and #M(t)# mass of total system $$M(t) = M_{C} + m(t)$$ $$\Rightarrow \frac{dM(t)}{dt} = \frac{dm(t)}{dt}$$ $$P_i = Mv + u \, dm$$ $$P_f = (M + dm)(v + dv)$$ $$\Delta P = M \, dv + (v - u) \, dm$$ $$F = \frac{dP}{dt} = M \frac{dv}{dt} + (v - u) \frac{dm}{dt}$$ $$F = u \frac{dm}{dt} = \rho A u^2$$ from conservation of momentum , the cannon recoils with the same force which it applies. $$\quad \frac{dm}{dt}...
I was thinking using 2 purple mattress samples, and taping them together, I do want other ideas though, the main guidelines are; Must have a volume LESS than 1600 cubic centimeters, and CAN'T exceed 25 cm in ANY direction. Must be LESS than 1 kg. NO parachutes. NO glue or Tape can touch the egg. MUST be able to take egg out in less than 1 minute. Grade A large eggs will be used.
