Styrofoam extrusion-Thickness and Density Measuring Device

AI Thread Summary
A project is underway to continuously measure the density and thickness of Styrofoam sheets during the extrusion process. While some sensors capable of measuring thickness are available, they are costly, around $10,000, and do not measure density. The individual seeks recommendations for companies that manufacture density measuring devices suitable for this application. There is also a question about the potential use of ultrasound devices for this purpose. Finding an effective and affordable solution is crucial for the project's success.

Hi all,

Im currently working on a project that requires me to continuously measure the density and thickness of a sheet during an extrusion Styrofoam process.

I have researched sensors and have found some that will do the job but of course they are in the $10k range. These however only measure the thickness. I can't seem to find some that measure the density. I have no experience in this field. Does anyone know of a company that makes a density measuring device that would work for this?

Thanks

Would an ultrasound device work?

Hi all, I have a question. So from the derivation of the Isentropic process relationship PV^gamma = constant, there is a step dW = PdV, which can only be said for quasi-equilibrium (or reversible) processes. As such I believe PV^gamma = constant (and the family of equations) should not be applicable to just adiabatic processes? Ie, it should be applicable only for adiabatic + reversible = isentropic processes? However, I've seen couple of online notes/books, and...
I have an engine that uses a dry sump oiling system. The oil collection pan has three AN fittings to use for scavenging. Two of the fittings are approximately on the same level, the third is about 1/2 to 3/4 inch higher than the other two. The system ran for years with no problem using a three stage pump (one pressure and two scavenge stages). The two scavenge stages were connected at times to any two of the three AN fittings on the tank. Recently I tried an upgrade to a four stage pump...
