Critical factors are the power output and output type (square wave, modified sine wave, sine wave).

Have you considered a computer or autoparts store?
Probably cheaper than building your own.
 
actually this is my eng. project. can i do it just by using dc power supply and connected it to an inverter?
so that i can get the desired output (sine wave) and how can i measure the (THD) total harmonic distortion of the output wave?

What would be the specifications for a DC power supply to run an inverter?
You could use a meter to measure distortion or sample the output and run a FFT on it.
