The bomb!

I see what you mean: The thing that looks like an envelope with a bomb on it. That means that you have posted in that thread. (Somewhere there's a guide to those symbols.)

https://www.physicsforums.com/Nexus/statusicon/thread_dot.gif - you have posted in this thread (any envelope with a dot in the middle means you have posted in the thread, scroll over it to see how many times you have posted in the thread)

https://www.physicsforums.com/Nexus/statusicon/thread_hot.gif - hot thread, lots of activity (lots of views, I think)

https://www.physicsforums.com/Nexus/statusicon/thread_dot_lock.gif - thread is locked and you have posted in it

https://www.physicsforums.com/Nexus/statusicon/thread_lock.gif - thread is locked and you have not posted in it (not 100% sure on this one)

https://www.physicsforums.com/Nexus/misc/paperclip.gif - Someone has attached something to this thread (its either this or the thing that shows there is a poll going on that you are talking about when you talk about the rectangle to the right I would guess..) Or it could be the thumb tack icon which denotes that a thread has been sticked (not really rectangular though :D)

You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
