What Should an Incoming EE Student Expect and How to Prepare?

AI Thread Summary
Preparing for college involves understanding what to expect academically and socially. New students should anticipate a challenging transition, particularly in managing study habits. It's crucial to focus on foundational subjects like math during the first year, as many engineering majors, including Electrical Engineering (EE), will not dive into major-specific courses until later in the program. Engaging with mentors and utilizing resources can help ease the adjustment. Additionally, living in dorms can enhance the college experience by fostering connections with peers. Overall, preparation should include developing effective study strategies and being ready for a rigorous academic environment.

Welcome to the PF, Jose.

I have requested that this thread be moved to the High Energy Physics forum. No, just kidding around with Dave.

You can get an idea of what to expect from my Mentor Biography here: https://www.physicsforums.com/threads/meet-a-mentor-berkeman.684732/

I found undergrad very challenging at first, and then much more manageable once I figured out how to study (and how much to study).

What is your background? What will you be majoring in at college? Are you staying in the dorms your first year at college?

Although you'll be majoring in EE, you won't likely take any EE courses until probably the 2nd semester sophmore year (maybe the first semester) so you have a fair amount of time to learn more about the "EE" part. In frosh year you'll take the same stuff all the STEM people take. Focus on the math.

Hey, I am Andreas from Germany. I am currently 35 years old and I want to relearn math and physics. This is not one of these regular questions when it comes to this matter. So... I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
