Why did we assume it to be 45 degrees?

AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around calculating the net vector displacement of a motorist's journey involving three segments of travel. The motorist travels south, west, and northwest, with the northwest segment assumed to be at a 45-degree angle due to its position between north and west. There is confusion regarding a typo in the time calculation for the westward travel, which should be 2 minutes instead of 2.6 minutes. The assumption of the 45-degree angle is clarified as a standard interpretation of northwest direction. The conversation highlights the importance of accurately interpreting problem statements in physics.

Homework Statement

a motorist drives south at 20 m/s for 3 min, then turns west and travels west at 25m/s for 2 min, and finally travels n/w at 30 m/s for 1 min. for this 6 minute trip, find the net vector displacement

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

distance 1: 20m/s * 3min * 60s/min = 3600m south
distance 2: 25m/s * 2.6min * 60s/min = 3900m west
distance 3: 30m/s * 1min * 60s/min * cos45 = 1273m west
... 30m/s * 1min * 60s/min * sin45 = 1273m north

My real problem is why we assumed the angle is 45 degrees? Why did we dissect the 90 degree angle in half for the north west if it doesn't tell us in the problem?

It says that it travels n/w = northwest, which means half-way between North and West. That's where the 45 degrees comes in.

thank you!

In the problem statement it says "travels west at 25m/s for 2 min" yet in your attempt at a solution you change it to 2.6 min. Why?

just a silly typo sorry

TL;DR Summary: I came across this question from a Sri Lankan A-level textbook. Question - An ice cube with a length of 10 cm is immersed in water at 0 °C. An observer observes the ice cube from the water, and it seems to be 7.75 cm long. If the refractive index of water is 4/3, find the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. I could not understand how the apparent height of the ice cube in the water depends on the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. Does anyone have an...
Thread 'Variable mass system : water sprayed into a moving container'
Starting with the mass considerations #m(t)# is mass of water #M_{c}# mass of container and #M(t)# mass of total system $$M(t) = M_{C} + m(t)$$ $$\Rightarrow \frac{dM(t)}{dt} = \frac{dm(t)}{dt}$$ $$P_i = Mv + u \, dm$$ $$P_f = (M + dm)(v + dv)$$ $$\Delta P = M \, dv + (v - u) \, dm$$ $$F = \frac{dP}{dt} = M \frac{dv}{dt} + (v - u) \frac{dm}{dt}$$ $$F = u \frac{dm}{dt} = \rho A u^2$$ from conservation of momentum , the cannon recoils with the same force which it applies. $$\quad \frac{dm}{dt}...
