When will universities disappear?
Just had a very interesting discussion with the Head of School and Disciplines Leads at our university. The broad consensus is that the whole higher education system is likely to vanish at some point. AR / VR labs and AI-led online education will eventually turn universities into research...- Corpuscule

Physics In retrospect, are you glad with the choice to have done a postdoc?
Yes, both in industry and in academia. The key is not to get stuck in postdocs for too long. Do one postdoc, at maximum two - and then move one (either move to academic tenure track or leave academia). Depending on what you do. If you "upgrade" by doing a postdoc in a respected and...- Corpuscule

How to search for research students?
Thanks a lot for useful advice everyone! Do you know any online boards where ads for research opportunities (undergrad-to-PhD) are typically placed?- Corpuscule

How to search for research students?
Andy, it's a bit of everything. I am at a PhD granting university (not a well-known one), and I offer stipends that are standard in this uni (and competitive nationally) for a few well-defined projects ranging from short-term undergraduate research to PhD (both experimental and numerical). I...- Corpuscule

How to search for research students?
Thanks Dr Courtney, that's useful advice. Any particular places on LinkedIn? My contacts are filled with PhD students and PhD holders, not really the target audience if I'm looking for a new research student (PhD or otherwise).- Corpuscule

How to search for research students?
Hi everyone! I'm not sure if it's a good place to post it, but I'd like to ask for your advice on good ways to search for research students (interns, summer scholars, PhDs etc) other than from within my teaching classes or through research collaborators? Established academics often get emails...- Corpuscule

Physics Should only people from elite universities bother with TT (tenure track)?
I accidentally ended up doing that because I liked it (didn't really have a plan B) and then accidentally ended up getting a 50% teaching / 50% research TT in R2 three years after a PhD :) Incredibly happy! :) R2/R3 is not R1, but there is quite a bit of cutting edge research in R2/R3 if the...- Corpuscule

Aspiring to be a life long postdoc. Is that realistic?
Thanks. I am currently employed as a non-tenure track faculty member (equivalent to postdoc, but with no strictly-defined end-date and with proper benefits). So far (1.5 years after a PhD) in addition to working on my supervisors' projects I have been successful in securing small-to-mid scale...- Corpuscule

Aspiring to be a life long postdoc. Is that realistic?
I like academic work, and I am fairly good at it, but not good enough to get on the tenure track. Postdoctoral salary for me is sufficient to comfortably support a family of four, and we don't mind moving from time to time, since my wife is not working. Is expecting to work as a postdoc for the...- Corpuscule

Is it a good idea to do a uni postdoc without publishing?
1&2 - yes, 3 - doesn't seem to exist in Au, hence relocation is difficult. Getting something outside of academia might be more realistic outside of Au as well, but unlike postdocs, it will probably require some kind of work permit and local connections.- Corpuscule

Is it a good idea to do a uni postdoc without publishing?
Dear Choppy, thank for so much for your detailed answer! In my case it is "an option of many" where I have little understanding "which option is going to fit best with the long term goals". My main long term goal to support my family of 4, while getting a minimum of postdoc-level income...- Corpuscule

Is it a good idea to do a uni postdoc without publishing?
Some university research groups offer postdoctoral positions sponsored by industry and focused on industrial R&D. That means mostly technical work and little-to-no publishing. Also such positions often don't have strict time limits, allowing postdocs to stay as long as this arrangement remains...- Corpuscule

Physics What do physicists do after several post-PhD years in academia?
Thanks a lot to everyone! That's plenty of useful input! I think I'll just try to stay in academia for a while, since I like it a lot and seem to be moderately successful. Along the way I'll try to get at as many useful industry contacts and skills as I can and likely attempt a commercialisation...- Corpuscule

Did academic career requirements change in recent years?
In the past it appeared that in some institutions, the very fact that a postdoc could get research funding on his/her own might have been the impetus for them to continue to hire his/her as a staff member. As much is stated in the PhysicsForums guide...- Corpuscule

Physics What do physicists do after several post-PhD years in academia?
I may be wrong, but it appears to be an age-related thing. The career opportunities for recent PhD graduates in their twenties may be quite different from career opportunities for failed academics in their thirties and forties. There may be other reasons, but in non-academic job advertisements...- Corpuscule
