Flowmetry Analysis (relating height to flow rate)

AI Thread Summary
The discussion focuses on calculating the instantaneous height of a liquid in a cylinder that is both filling and emptying through an orifice. The user has applied Torricelli's theorem and the continuity equation, using flow rates and cylinder dimensions to find volume and height. However, they express uncertainty about the accuracy of their modeling approach and seek assistance in resolving their confusion. The key challenge lies in integrating the varying inflow and outflow rates over time. Clarification on the correct methodology for this fluid dynamics problem is requested.

Hello!

1. Homework Statement

I need to find the instantaneous height of a liquid during the simultaneous filling and emptying (through a hole) of a cylinder. I have varying Qin at incremental time of 1 sec. with cylinder area=5 cm and orifice area=0.5 cm.

Homework Equations

Torricelli's theorem
Continuity equation[/B]

The Attempt at a Solution

1) Used V=Qt to find volume for each flow rate.
2) Calculated H=V/A.
3) Used torricelli's theorem to calculate Qout.

But this doesn't seem to me like the correct modeling of the problem and am stuck on how to go about it.

Help anyone??

Kindly see the attached pdf. My attempt to solve it, is in it. I'm wondering if my solution is right. My idea is this: At any point of time, the ball may be assumed to be at an incline which is at an angle of θ(kindly see both the pics in the pdf file). The value of θ will continuously change and so will the value of friction. I'm not able to figure out, why my solution is wrong, if it is wrong .
TL;DR Summary: I came across this question from a Sri Lankan A-level textbook. Question - An ice cube with a length of 10 cm is immersed in water at 0 °C. An observer observes the ice cube from the water, and it seems to be 7.75 cm long. If the refractive index of water is 4/3, find the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. I could not understand how the apparent height of the ice cube in the water depends on the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. Does anyone have an...
