In summary, the conversation is discussing various methods for obtaining all the points that lie on a great circle. One method involves rotating the sphere and using the north pole and one of the given points to find the other points. Another method involves finding the plane created by the two points and the center of the sphere, which will intersect the sphere in a great circle.

Given what information? How are you given the great circle?

If I'm gven two points with it's lat/lon

The two points are the start point and the end point. I need to know all the points thru which the great circle arc would pass thru.

Rotate the sphere twice, so that one point is the north pole and the other point lies on the great circle connecting (0,0,1) to (1,0,0). Figure out the points, then rotate back.

Hi hussainak! Welcome to PF!

Another method: the two points and the centre of the sphere define a plane.

That plane intersects the sphere in a great circle.

1. What is a great circle?

A great circle is a circle on the surface of a sphere that has the same center as the sphere. It is the largest circle that can be drawn on a sphere and divides it into two equal halves.

2. How do you calculate the distance between two points on a great circle?

The distance between two points on a great circle can be calculated using the haversine formula, which takes into account the curvature of the Earth's surface. This formula uses the latitude and longitude coordinates of the two points to calculate the distance between them.

3. What is the significance of the great circle in navigation?

The great circle is important in navigation because it is the shortest distance between two points on the Earth's surface. It is used in aviation and marine navigation to determine the most efficient routes between two locations.

4. How do you find all points on a great circle?

To find all points on a great circle, you can use the equation of the circle which involves the radius, center point, and angle of rotation. Alternatively, you can use a mapping tool or software that can calculate and plot all points on a great circle.

5. Are great circles found on all planets?

Great circles can be found on any spherical object, including planets. As long as the object has a curved surface, a great circle can be drawn on it. However, on planets with irregular shapes, the great circle may not be the shortest distance between two points due to varying curvatures.
