Homework Help Overview

The problem involves a mirror where an object is placed 15 cm away, resulting in a virtual, upright image that is half the size of the object. Participants are discussing how to determine the distance of the image from the mirror and the radius of curvature of the mirror.

Discussion Character

  • Mixed

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants are analyzing the mirror formula and attempting to apply it to find the image distance and radius of curvature. There are corrections being made regarding the application of the formula, particularly in the signs used for distances.

Discussion Status

There is ongoing clarification of the calculations involved, with some participants correcting earlier steps. A potential answer for the image distance and radius of curvature has been proposed, but there is no explicit consensus on the final values.

Contextual Notes

Participants are working under the assumption that the mirror creates a virtual image and are discussing the implications of this on the calculations. There are indications of confusion regarding the signs in the mirror equation.

Homework Statement

An object is placed 15cm from a certain mirror, the image is half the size of the object, upright, and virtual. how far is the image fromt he mirror, and what is the radius of curavature of the mirror?

Homework Equations

1/f = 1/p + 1/q

f= r/2

The Attempt at a Solution

1/f = 1/p + 1/q
1/15= 1/-7.5

1/q = 1/5cm

f= r/2
r=f*2
15*2= 30cm

Physics news on Phys.org

1/f = 1/p + 1/q
1/15= 1/-7.5
This step is wrong.
It should be
1/f = 1/p + 1/q
1/f = 1/15 + 1/-7.5

so base on what was corrected the answer is -1/15cm is how far is the image from the mirror, and what is the radius of curavature of the mirror is f= r/2
r=f*2
-1/15*2= -2/15cm?

oh i mean -30cm for r

Yes.
