How Fast Does Nitrogen Expand to Power Piston Arms?

Click For Summary

Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around the expansion rate of nitrogen gas at various pressures (psi) and its implications for the velocity of a piston arm in a mechanical system. The focus is on understanding how nitrogen behaves under specific conditions to optimize piston movement.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Assumption checking

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants explore the relationship between nitrogen expansion and piston velocity, with one questioning the necessity of high velocity versus force in practical applications. There is a consideration of alternative methods such as increasing temperature or gas volume to achieve desired outcomes.

Discussion Status

The discussion is ongoing, with participants sharing their thoughts on the importance of velocity in the context of piston operation. Some guidance is offered regarding the trade-offs between speed and force, but no consensus has been reached on the best approach.

Contextual Notes

Participants are navigating assumptions about the relationship between gas expansion, pressure, and the mechanical performance of the piston system. The discussion hints at the complexity of optimizing both speed and force without definitive conclusions.

i'm trying to figure out the expansion rate of nitrogen at any given psi in room temperature. roughly in fps.

trying to calculate how fast we can move a piston arm to get maximum velocities

Im not sure on this, but may i ask why the velocity is so important? If you are looking at doing work with this piston it might be easier to simply move it at a slower rate, but with more force. (Heating the nitrogen to a higher temp, using more of it, ETC)

If that makes sense.

the faster the ram moves the higher the velocity can be reached to propel an object
