Shear force and bending moment diagram

AI Thread Summary
The discussion focuses on the challenges faced in solving a shear force and bending moment diagram for a beam. The participant struggles with calculating the reactions at supports, specifically identifying a signage error in the vertical force equilibrium equation. Correctly summing forces and moments is emphasized, particularly the need to assign signs based on the chosen direction for moments. The importance of drawing a free body diagram (FBD) is highlighted as a critical step in the solution process. Understanding these concepts is essential for successfully completing the assignment.

You have a signage error in calculating Ay, which you should have realized; when summing forces in the vertical direction, Ay + By should equal the applied 4 kN force. When you sum moments about a point, and choose counterclockwise as plus, the clockwise moments get a minus sign in front of them.

Thread 'Collision of a bullet on a rod-string system: query'
In this question, I have a question. I am NOT trying to solve it, but it is just a conceptual question. Consider the point on the rod, which connects the string and the rod. My question: just before and after the collision, is ANGULAR momentum CONSERVED about this point? Lets call the point which connects the string and rod as P. Why am I asking this? : it is clear from the scenario that the point of concern, which connects the string and the rod, moves in a circular path due to the string...
