AI Thread Summary
Expressed sequence tag clones (ESTs) are short sequences of DNA derived from complementary DNA (cDNA), which is synthesized from RNA expressed in cells. In the context of tumors, ESTs are used to analyze gene expression by isolating RNA from tumor samples and creating an EST library for comparison across different tumors. The term "sporadic" refers to tumors that are non-hereditary, indicating they do not run in families. Additionally, "sporadic" can imply that these tumors occur infrequently or without a discernible pattern, highlighting their unpredictable nature. Understanding these concepts is crucial for studying tumor biology and genetics.

What does "expressed sequence tag clones" mean

and what does it mean with "sporadic"? For example when it says; "A few sporadic tumours".

Thanks.

A sporadic tumor is non-heretitary, meaning that the it is not familial.

An expressed sequence tags (ESTs) are derived from cDNA (which again comes from RNA expressed in the cell). In this case you isolate RNA from a tumor, synthesize cDNA from that and make an EST library. You can then compare the ESTs of different tumors.

Can you post some of the context of the statement about sporadic tumors? There is the non-hereditary context Monique mentioned, but it could also be used to indicate infrequent or appearing without any pattern.

The study provides critical new insights into the African Humid Period, a time between 14,500 and 5,000 years ago when the Sahara desert was a green savanna, rich in water bodies that facilitated human habitation and the spread of pastoralism. Later aridification turned this region into the world's largest desert. Due to the extreme aridity of the region today, DNA preservation is poor, making this pioneering ancient DNA study all the more significant. Genomic analyses reveal that the...
