Will it be hard to find planets with live plate tectonics?

AI Thread Summary
Live plate tectonics may be unique to Earth, with Mars being a primary focus for exploration regarding this phenomenon. Current research has not definitively established the presence of active plate tectonics on Mars. Jupiter's moon Io exhibits deformation attributed to tectonic activity, raising questions about the influence of Jupiter itself. The discussion highlights the challenges in identifying planets with live plate tectonics beyond Earth. Understanding these geological processes is crucial for assessing planetary habitability.

Are live plate tectonics unique?

The only planet around that we could try to look at for this purpose is Mars. I don't know if scientists have gotten to that point yet.

One of Jupiter's moons is deformed because of the plate tectonics, Io. Or is it Jupiter doing that? I forget.

Googling it real quickly turned up this:

Today at about 4:30 am I saw the conjunction of Venus and Jupiter, where they were about the width of the full moon, or one half degree apart. Did anyone else see it? Edit: The moon is 2,200 miles in diameter and at a distance of 240,000 miles. Thereby it subtends an angle in radians of 2,200/240,000=.01 (approximately). With pi radians being 180 degrees, one radian is 57.3 degrees, so that .01 radians is about .50 degrees (angle subtended by the moon). (.57 to be more exact, but with...
