Comparing two sets of data: multiple time points

I am trying to compare two groups (for statistical significance), a control and a treatment group across more than one time point, for a single variable. For example Control Treatment 0 sec x x 5 sec x x 10 sec x...

Comparing Automobile Fuels: Petroleum vs Diesel vs LPG

I need to review 6 journal articles (approx. 150 words/article) relating to chemistry of the car (any topic). I need a topic which is going to allow me to easily identify the biases of the people who wrote the article, and that will be somewhat controversial, interesting and relevant to our...

Designing a Coke Bottle Submarine Experiment

I am designing an experiment in which a plastic coke bottle will be made to float, subsurface, sink, and return to the water's surface by external manipulation. (depth of 1 meter) The way I want to do this is using three syringes and fish-tank tubing to control the volume(s) of air in the...

Why Are Facultative Anaerobes Growing at the Water/Oil Interface?

A facultative anaerobe is growing photoheterotrophically in sterile water, covered with a thick layer of oil inside a test-tube containing 1g fructose. It has been observed that the bacteria are growing at the water/oil interface, and appear to be growing inside the oil layer. Which of these...

What is the reason for bacteria growth at the interface between oil and water?

Thanks. I have researched the different types of growth, and the substrates used in each. The controls, one for each experiment, are showing no growth. To my knowledge, the oil was not sterilized. I am also finding that the bacteria (Rhodospirillum rubrum) are growing inside the oil.

What is the reason for bacteria growth at the interface between oil and water?

In my experiment with R.rubrum bacteria, which can grow phototrophically in anaerobic conditons, and by fermentation in dark anaerobic conditions, I am noticing that the bacteria are growing at the interface between the oil and the water. The experimented is testing: photoautotrophic growth...

Testing photoheterotrophic, autotrophic and fermentation of R.rubrum?

Thanks. Unfortunately our school has no equipment such as the GasPak you mentioned :frown: However , the bacteria were put in test-tubes filled with sterile water, then covered with oil. Hopefully things will work out.

Testing photoheterotrophic, autotrophic and fermentation of R.rubrum?

I need to test photoheteretrophic, autotrophic and fermentation growth of R.rubrum bacteria, all of which require anaerobic conditions. For fermentation, i am placing the bacteria with fructose in the dark, and for phototrophic in the light with fructose, and for autotrophic in the light with...

Rust in test-tubes of HCl FeO or Fe3O4?

rust in test-tubes of HCl FeO or Fe3O4?? I am doing experiments on steel nails in HCl solutions with a pH of about 1.5 - 2. The rust is black in colour, and is not attached to the surface of the nails. It stays at the bottom of the test-tube. Is this FeO or Fe3O4. Why is it that the rust I am...

Carbon content in steel and corrosion

I have two questions about carbon steel. How does the carbon content of steel effect the rate of corrosion? Apart from providing strength to the steel, how does carbon effect the properties of steel?

Why is there more rust in a solution with less salt?

In the low saline solution, there is both more visible surface rust on the nails, as well as flaked off rust. The high saline solutions have almost no surface rust, but a little less flaked off rust than the low saline solutions.

Why is there more rust in a solution with less salt?

more rust in less salt?? As part of my chemistry experiments on corrosion, I am noticing that the steel nails are rusting more in solutions of 3.5g/L salt, than 35g/L salt. What could be some reasons to explain this?? I would have thought that the 35g/L solutions would have lead to more...

The Correct Time on the Clock During the Presentation Ceremony?

    Thank you. But, I don't get 75m for some reason. L = sqrt(1 - (1.5^2/3^2)) * 100 L = sqrt(1 - 0.25)*100 L = sqrt(0.75)*100 L = 86.60254038 Where have I gone wrong?

The Correct Time on the Clock During the Presentation Ceremony?

Homework Statement 1)An ex-student with a new spacecraft 'buzzes' the school oval on sports day at 1.5 * 10^8 m/s. How long does the 100m track appear to him. 2) The sports day began at 9am. The student buzzed the school at an average speed of 0.5c till the presentation ceremony at...
