A cyclist travels 26.7 km in 54 min 16 s. What is his average velocity in m/s?

AI Thread Summary
To find the average velocity of a cyclist who travels 26.7 km in 54 minutes and 16 seconds, the distance must be converted to meters and the time to seconds. The average velocity is calculated using the formula: average velocity = displacement/time. Converting 26.7 km to meters gives 26,700 m, and converting 54 minutes and 16 seconds to seconds results in 3,259 seconds. The average velocity is then obtained by dividing the distance by the time, yielding approximately 8.2 m/s.

Welcome to PF,

The two pieces of information you have been given are the distance traveled by the cyclist and the time it took him to do so. Can you think of how you might use the given information to calculate what the problem is asking for? As a starting point, what is the definition of average velocity?

average velocity = Displacement divided by time

so do i convert km into m and min into secs?

You need to use conversion factors and dimensional analysis.
1 km = 1000 m and 1 min = 60 s

Change these into a form so that the kms and mins cancel out when you multiply them with the average velocity, and then you will get the answer in m/s.

thank you :)

Kindly see the attached pdf. My attempt to solve it, is in it. I'm wondering if my solution is right. My idea is this: At any point of time, the ball may be assumed to be at an incline which is at an angle of θ(kindly see both the pics in the pdf file). The value of θ will continuously change and so will the value of friction. I'm not able to figure out, why my solution is wrong, if it is wrong .
TL;DR Summary: I came across this question from a Sri Lankan A-level textbook. Question - An ice cube with a length of 10 cm is immersed in water at 0 °C. An observer observes the ice cube from the water, and it seems to be 7.75 cm long. If the refractive index of water is 4/3, find the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. I could not understand how the apparent height of the ice cube in the water depends on the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. Does anyone have an...
