Aspect ratio of cylinder floating in water?

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on determining the aspect ratio (h/d) for a cylinder with a specific gravity of 0.65 that will float vertically in water. The proposed formula for this aspect ratio is H/d = 0.65/sqrt(8 x 0.65). There is confusion regarding the concept of specific weights and how they relate to the calculations. Clarification is sought on whether the ratio of specific weights should equal 0.65 in the context of the problem. Understanding these relationships is crucial for accurately solving the floating cylinder scenario.

Aspect ratio of cylinder floating in water?

Hi,

Basically the question is:

What is the aspect ratio (h/d) for a cylinder of specific gravity 0.65 above which it will float vertically? (Note use GM = I/V - BG)
So i found a solution that is simliar and can help solve the problem. (please see attached)

Using this information would the ans be:

H/d = 0.65/sqrt(8 x 0.65)

I think the main problem is i don't fully understand the specific weights.

where it says h = specific weight /specific weight 2 x H

should specific weight /specific weight 2 be = 0.65

hope this makes sense thank you for your help

Starting with the mass considerations #m(t)# is mass of water #M_{c}# mass of container and #M(t)# mass of total system $$M(t) = M_{C} + m(t)$$ $$\Rightarrow \frac{dM(t)}{dt} = \frac{dm(t)}{dt}$$ $$P_i = Mv + u \, dm$$ $$P_f = (M + dm)(v + dv)$$ $$\Delta P = M \, dv + (v - u) \, dm$$ $$F = \frac{dP}{dt} = M \frac{dv}{dt} + (v - u) \frac{dm}{dt}$$ $$F = u \frac{dm}{dt} = \rho A u^2$$ from conservation of momentum , the cannon recoils with the same force which it applies. $$\quad \frac{dm}{dt}...
I was thinking using 2 purple mattress samples, and taping them together, I do want other ideas though, the main guidelines are; Must have a volume LESS than 1600 cubic centimeters, and CAN'T exceed 25 cm in ANY direction. Must be LESS than 1 kg. NO parachutes. NO glue or Tape can touch the egg. MUST be able to take egg out in less than 1 minute. Grade A large eggs will be used.
