Solving a Circuit: What Will the Voltmeter Show?

In summary, a voltmeter is an important instrument used to measure potential difference in an electrical circuit by connecting two points with low resistance wires and measuring the voltage drop. It is crucial in accurately measuring voltage and identifying any issues in a circuit. The steps involved in solving a circuit using a voltmeter include turning off the circuit, connecting the voltmeter in parallel, and taking voltage readings. Factors such as the quality of the voltmeter, resistance of wires, and external interference can affect the accuracy of voltmeter readings. The voltmeter can show us the flow of electricity and help us identify malfunctions by measuring the voltage across specific components.

The emf source resistance is equal to the bulb's resistance. The voltmeter has some big resistance and it shows 6volts.

What will the voltmeter show when the bulb burns out ?

Homework Equations

I think this is the equation needed : EMF=IR+Ir

The Attempt at a Solution

I don't know how to solve this please give a hint.

EMF=IR+Ir
In the above equation it is given that r = R and IR = 6 V.
Then what is the EMF?

Related to Solving a Circuit: What Will the Voltmeter Show?

What is a voltmeter and how does it work?

A voltmeter is an instrument used to measure the potential difference between two points in an electrical circuit. It works by connecting the two points with low resistance wires and measuring the voltage drop across them.

Why is it important to use a voltmeter in solving a circuit?

A voltmeter is important because it allows us to accurately measure the voltage at different points in a circuit. This information is crucial in determining the behavior of the circuit and identifying any potential issues.

What are the steps involved in solving a circuit using a voltmeter?

The first step is to make sure the circuit is turned off and disconnected from any power source. Then, connect the voltmeter in parallel with the component or section of the circuit you want to measure. Turn on the circuit and take the voltage reading. Repeat this process for other components or sections as needed.

What factors can affect the accuracy of voltmeter readings?

The accuracy of voltmeter readings can be affected by factors such as the quality of the voltmeter, the resistance of the voltmeter itself, the resistance of the wires used, and any external interference or noise in the circuit.

What can the voltmeter show us about a circuit?

The voltmeter can show us the potential difference between two points in a circuit, which can help us understand the flow of electricity and identify any issues or malfunctions. It can also help us measure the voltage across specific components to ensure they are functioning correctly.
