When To Do Internships During Nuclear Engineering Education

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the challenges faced by a student entering the Nuclear Engineering program at Oregon State University, particularly regarding internship opportunities. With most classes offered only once a year, the student is concerned about the feasibility of gaining sufficient experience through summer internships alone, especially given the extended duration of the degree. There is a focus on the potential value of internships at prestigious national labs like Los Alamos or Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and whether such experiences would enhance competitiveness for graduate school or employment with just a bachelor's degree. Insights and experiences from others in similar situations are sought to address these concerns.

Hello,
I will be beginning the Nuclear Engineering program at Oregon State University in the next couple of years and I have a question about internships. Most of the classes in the program are offered only one term per year so it seams I will be stuck with just doing summer internships or taking a year off ( this is already shaping up to be a 6 year degree). Will doing summer internships give me enough experience to make me competitive in grad school or entering the work force with just a BS? I was hoping to get some experience at one of the national labs Like Los Alamos or INL but I don't know how valuable this would be. I would love to hear from other people who have been in this situation.

Thank you all very much.

Hey, I am Andreas from Germany. I am currently 35 years old and I want to relearn math and physics. This is not one of these regular questions when it comes to this matter. So... I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
