AI Thread Summary
Touching a door handle after walking across a carpet generates a shock due to static electricity. This phenomenon is primarily caused by charge induction, where shuffling on the carpet transfers electrons to the person, creating a charge. When the charged individual approaches the neutral door handle, a discharge occurs, resulting in the shock. The door handle acts as a conductor, allowing the induced charge to equalize. Understanding this process clarifies the distinction between charge by contact and charge by induction.

1. Ok this is really simple but I am a little confused so here is the question what kind of charge is this charge by contact, charge polarization, or charge by inductionYou walk across a carpeted room and when you touch the door handle, you feel a shock.I assume its charge by induction because the door handle is a neutral object and it is a conductor, and all you are doing it is touching the door handle, but I am still kind of confused whether it is a charge by contact because you are touching a door handle.

Welcome to PF.

The induction charge is developed by your shuffling your feet across the carpet. This "induces" the charging of you such that when you come in the vicinity of the doorknob that a discharge event occurs. The reason it is induction is because the floor and your feet - without your shuffling - are not otherwise charged. For instance running a wire from the carpet to the knob won't result in current.

o ok thank you for the response i understand now

Thread 'Variable mass system : water sprayed into a moving container'
Starting with the mass considerations #m(t)# is mass of water #M_{c}# mass of container and #M(t)# mass of total system $$M(t) = M_{C} + m(t)$$ $$\Rightarrow \frac{dM(t)}{dt} = \frac{dm(t)}{dt}$$ $$P_i = Mv + u \, dm$$ $$P_f = (M + dm)(v + dv)$$ $$\Delta P = M \, dv + (v - u) \, dm$$ $$F = \frac{dP}{dt} = M \frac{dv}{dt} + (v - u) \frac{dm}{dt}$$ $$F = u \frac{dm}{dt} = \rho A u^2$$ from conservation of momentum , the cannon recoils with the same force which it applies. $$\quad \frac{dm}{dt}...
I was thinking using 2 purple mattress samples, and taping them together, I do want other ideas though, the main guidelines are; Must have a volume LESS than 1600 cubic centimeters, and CAN'T exceed 25 cm in ANY direction. Must be LESS than 1 kg. NO parachutes. NO glue or Tape can touch the egg. MUST be able to take egg out in less than 1 minute. Grade A large eggs will be used.
