Electric Field Zero Points: Square Arrangement of Charges | Homework Question

AI Thread Summary
The discussion focuses on determining the points at which the electric field is zero for four charges arranged at the corners of a square. The initial suggestion identifies points A and B as potential zero-field locations due to the symmetry of equal charges. However, concerns are raised about the y-components of the electric field at these points, questioning whether they truly sum to zero. The participant acknowledges that while the x-components may balance, the influence of distant charges could result in a non-zero field in the y-direction. The conversation highlights the complexity of analyzing electric fields in multi-charge systems.

Homework Statement

Four charges are arranged on the corner of a square. At which points is the electric field equal to zero?

Homework Equations

None

The Attempt at a Solution

I chose A and B because the charges are equal so therefore the electric field will be zero right inbetween them.

Certainly the x components of the fields are balanced at A & B, but what about the field in the y direction at A & B? Is it 0 at those points?

Thanks for your help. I don't know about the y direction.

When you are at A what is the field from the far away negative charges? It would be non-zero wouldn't it?

Likewise at point B for the positive charges.

Thread 'Variable mass system : water sprayed into a moving container'
Starting with the mass considerations #m(t)# is mass of water #M_{c}# mass of container and #M(t)# mass of total system $$M(t) = M_{C} + m(t)$$ $$\Rightarrow \frac{dM(t)}{dt} = \frac{dm(t)}{dt}$$ $$P_i = Mv + u \, dm$$ $$P_f = (M + dm)(v + dv)$$ $$\Delta P = M \, dv + (v - u) \, dm$$ $$F = \frac{dP}{dt} = M \frac{dv}{dt} + (v - u) \frac{dm}{dt}$$ $$F = u \frac{dm}{dt} = \rho A u^2$$ from conservation of momentum , the cannon recoils with the same force which it applies. $$\quad \frac{dm}{dt}...
I was thinking using 2 purple mattress samples, and taping them together, I do want other ideas though, the main guidelines are; Must have a volume LESS than 1600 cubic centimeters, and CAN'T exceed 25 cm in ANY direction. Must be LESS than 1 kg. NO parachutes. NO glue or Tape can touch the egg. MUST be able to take egg out in less than 1 minute. Grade A large eggs will be used.
