sensors

Posted Oct5-09 at 06:46 AM by kool05

i want to make a data acquisition system for a boiler which can do the foll things
1)check fuel level
2)check water level
3)check fuel consumption
4)check water consumption
5)check steam generation
can any one pls help me with the sensors needed to do the above things.

fuel level -- float system as in auto car tank
water level.-- ether optical detecting the water level in the required sight glass on all boilers
or a floating magnet in a glass or similar tube
a bit more difficult to get proportional levels though
fuel-- some cars have a petrol MPG sensor that would be usefull to investigate as a start.
water consumption-- there must be some electronic means of metering water consumption.
steam generation-- this will depend on temperature and pressure.
i suggest you visit a steam power generating plant as they will have all the above and if you project is fore say a domestic boiler there will be a great lot of usefull ideas there

The only way I know to reliably measure liquid fuel consumption is to feed it inti the system in measured doses, say from a piston pump, and count how many increments of fuel have been added. Water is also liquid and can be measured in the same way. It's a simple, foolproof method, which is right for 1-offs and experiments.

It must be a low pressure system. It really wouldn't be a good idea to enclose the steam in any way, serious explosions occur in boilers and even little ones can kill. Never mind the terrible burns.
Boilermaking is a registered engineering trade and is not for hobbyists or students.
If the water is boiling there is steam. (note by the way that steam is really present above all water at a temperature above the "triple point" at 0.1 C)
    What's it for???
