Back in 2005, we had the "World Year of Physics 2005" (WYP2005).
In 2009, we will have the "International Year of Astronomy 2009" (IYA2009).

From About IYA2009 at www.astronomy2009.org.
<blockquote>The International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009) will be a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture, highlighted by the 400th anniversary of the first use of an astronomical telescope by Galileo Galilei. The aim of the Year is to stimulate worldwide interest, especially among young people, in astronomy and science under the central theme “The Universe, Yours to Discover”. IYA2009 events and activities will promote a greater appreciation of the inspirational aspects of astronomy that embody an invaluable shared resource for all nations.</blockquote>
An upcoming event is the American Astronomical Society (AAS) and Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP) Meeting in St. Louis, Missouri from May 31 to June 5 2008. Details are available at www.astrosociety.org/events/meeting.html.
Here is a list of national IYA websites. Get involved... IYA2009 "Make it Happen".
