I am still surprised at the attitude of some students

Posted Oct17-09 at 01:20 AM by Integral

Math class has been progressing much as expected. The basic properties, Commutative, associative, and distributive as well as the identity elements have been presented. I am actually surprised at the level of rigor with which the material is presented. The teacher defined the absolute value as the distance from zero. Which is my mind is a super definition.

There is girl in the math class who just makes me shake my head. She just does not seem to care, never makes any effort to do...

Trying to explain a curciut with current or Ohm's Law.

Posted Oct2-09 at 01:08 AM by Integral

The students build a simple circuit consisting of a battery, resistor and LED. Frequently the circuit does not work, therefore it is necessary to help the students find the problem. Since Ohm's Law and even the concept of current has not yet been presented I find it very difficult to explain, for example, why when a 1M Ohm resistor is used instead of a 100 Ohm the LED does not work.

I am convinced that the sooner you get all the basic concepts, voltage, current, and resistance in...

In Algeabra I and can't add???

Posted Sep30-09 at 01:05 AM by Integral

I finally got to help students in the math class. I was not surprised at the lack of motivation to work when left to their own devices but I was shocked at the pair a gals that when presented with the problem

10 + 2.5 * 2

came up with 6 as a answer and didn't even feel that it might be wrong.

In the electronics class we started building simple LED circuits.

One fellow couldn't get his Led to light. Voltage measurements showed that...

LED circiut.

Posted Sep29-09 at 10:54 AM by Integral

Finally moved on from the resistor color code. We passed out a sheet giving a brief description of a LED and a simple schematic diagram. The next project will be to build the circuit on a breadboard. Unfortunately we have not yet introduced either Ohm's Law or even current so it is difficult discuss anything of significance concerning the circuit.

It really seems to me that Ohm's Law is one of the key concepts that this class is presenting . If I were presenting the class Ohm's...

Another day spend on the resistor color code.

It seems like many of these kids simply do not hear what is said at the front of the room. I must explain the code system to each student. Not exactly true there were 2 or 3 out of 30 who seemed to get it from the start. Since there are over 30 students in the class it is not easy to give individual help to each individual.

What is it with these kids? I don't think I am seeing the worst, but a cross section of the population. There are a number who just do not care, they seem to...
