I'm going to be studying physics full-time, without a tutor or a class, roughly 25 to 50 hours a week from now until Sept 1. This will be a journal of my progress.

update

I'm going to be hopefully starting on Linear Algebra and Differential Equations in the next three weeks, but first I want to finish my study of Electricity (another 15 hours), also do about 10 hours of Optics and review my chemistry. I self-taught myself chemistry back in Oct 2010. That was the first science book I read when I decided that I needed to learn more about science. It was a bit of a blur because it had been roughly 20 years since I had real exposure to science. This time I expect...

two more weeks of classical physics

Posted Mar17-12 at 02:20 PM by bobsmith76 (Confessions of a studyholic)

I had to take a small break from my studies to focus on getting my poetry published. I'm trying to construct a database of about 300 poetry journals (most with a circulation of less than a 1000) then I need to submit to them. Publish or perish. It's something I hate doing, but I have no choice. I have to do this without illusions. Every year roughly 2000 different poets will submit to journals and only 10% will get published and only 20 (not necessarily the best 20) will receive a small amount...

preliminary study of calculus completed

Posted Mar5-12 at 11:21 PM by bobsmith76 (Confessions of a studyholic)

I'm getting ready to move on from calculus onto a college physics textbook. all in all i spent 190 hours studying it spread over 47 days, averaging 4.2 hours a day and 1.9 hours per section. i read about 1100 pages. as you can see from the chart below, together with a 4 day moving average and a polynomial curve, in the beginning i was bewildered and a bit overwhelmed, then i got the hang of it, got excited and completed the majority of my work, then my passion began to flag a bit.

calculus progress, update

Posted Feb8-12 at 10:54 PM by bobsmith76 (Confessions of a studyholic)

Here is a chart showing how many hours I study calculus per day, along with a 4 day moving average. I'm a night auditor at a hotel, so that gives me about 5 hours a night to study. I've been averaging about 6 hours a day, but I might be able to move that up to 7 hours a day since in the beginning studying calc gave me a headache which no longer happens and I was also struggling really hard to fix my sleep schedule to the time I wanted, which I've done now. At the rate I'm going I should be done...

introduction

Posted Jan30-12 at 03:06 PM by bobsmith76 (Confessions of a studyholic)

Just a little bit about me: 35, unmarried, good working knowledge of 10 languages, written a poetic novel. I work as a night auditor at a hotel which enables me to study about 5 hours a night on the job. I used to be extroverted and a bit of a social butterfly, but my hunger for knowledge keeps chaining me more and more tightly to my desk. I'm one of those ridiculous fools that is trying to literally make sense of all human knowledge. I know I won't be successful, but I sure do love trying. I've...
