Misconceptions about black holes

Officer 1: "Oh no! That black hole has sucked up the entire Zeta system!"
Officer 2: "Isn't that system 5,000 ly away from the black hole?"

One of the earliest inaccuracies I noticed in fiction is about black holes. We occasionally see them as superpowerful funnels eating a galaxy or two. Or three.

In actuality a black hole's reach is limited. If the sun suddenly turned into a black hole (aliens did it!), the planets wouldn't be "sucked...
