A confusing answer to a simple question: What is quantum theory about?

Posted Mar28-12 at 07:05 AM by Demystifier

Quantum theory is called "quantum" because it is supposed to be about quanta - discrete spectrum of certain quantities which in classical theory have a continuous spectrum. But actually, quantum theory does not need to be about quanta at all, because many quantum quantities actually have a continuous spectrum.

If you think it's confusing, then you've seen nothing. Quantum mechanics is (or at least used to be) about Schrodinger equation, which is a quantum theory of electron....

A rigorous minimum assumption derivation of the Lorentz transformation

Posted Mar24-12 at 08:00 AM by Huang XingBin
Updated Apr5-12 at 07:42 PM by Redbelly98

Abstract
The available derivations of the Lorentz transformation (LT) are of questionable validity because they introduce some assumptions in addition to Einstein's two fundamental postulates or, even if they do not do so, are highly abstract and abstruse (as is the case with two or three 'exact' derivations). The rigorous LT derivation proposed in this paper has only the constant speed of light and two thought experiments as its underlying assumptions. With the constant speed of light used...

Introducing Myself

Posted Mar22-12 at 09:27 PM by theginger

I guess if anyone would care to know who I am, I might as well post a bit on myself.

In short, I'm a determined and highly motivated adolescent residing in the southwest of the USA. I've had high expectations put upon myself since before I can remember.

I'm currently in ninth grade, taking a full honors and pre-IB schedule while maintaining a 4.0 or higher. My one and only passion in life is to write, but I also have a sincere fondness for the human brain and anything...

Drama

Posted Mar21-12 at 09:28 AM by mathgeek1

I know this really doesn't have to do with math and science but I'll post it anyway just to get it out. Who has a ton of drama going on anywhere, their family, their school. Just comment below to let me know I'm not the only person experiencing a ton (not 2,000 pounds, sillies) of drama at school. I actually think it's the same everywhere, not just in movies. You have the popular girls who date popular boys and all hang out at the dances and then you have nerds that never hang out with the popular...
