I'm a new first year graduate student and I've decided that my way of learning mathematics may not be the most efficient. I often memorize proofs in the book in the hopes that I'll be able to see where to apply the techniques used in the problems(I often understand the logic of a proof but won't...
Hi all! Been a while since I was on PF and I greatly regret it. Forgot how great the community was. Anyways on to my point.
I'm going into my second ywar of post secondary and planning to major in physics, and have the eventual goal of understanding both General relativity, and Quantum...
Hello. I am writing this post, hoping, you can help me make a decision. This September i will aplly to University. I have two fields of interesting: Pure Mathematics and Computer Science. Which to choose?
I was really bad at math a year ago, not knowing how to solve a linear equation. Now i...
Hi, I'm currently in high school but I know several university maths and physics (just a little)
I want to know about
Maths:
Lagrangian and Hamiltonian
Fourier Transform (I self-studied Fourier series)
Differential Equations (only know one way to solve them, I think its the most basic one)...
I was some youtube videos and i got sucked into this channel called "numberphile". They were talking about infinite sets. In particular the set that is the sum of all natural numbers. Through some creative algebra they demonstrate the proof. Somehow the set that is equal to the sum of all...
This is a bit of an odd problem - more philosophical, perhaps. I've been reading The Art of Mathematics, by Jerry P. King, and the author points out that mathematicians do mathematics for aesthetic reasons - for beauty. They see beauty in the mathematics that they do. My question is this: what...
I have a question about learning the mathematics of Quantum Physics...
So, I've been really interested in Astronomy and Quantum Physics since I was a kid. Owing to some accidental education and career choices, I however, ended up becoming a Business Consultant. Although I have spend most of my...
I got a B.S. in liberal arts and sciences from UIUC, with a concentration in general mathematics. My GPA, for a variety of reasons, is mediocre (2.5, roughly equal for math and non-math classes), but I nonetheless have an eye for graduate school. So I decided to look at the syllabus for the...
What are some rigorous theoretical books on mathematics for each branch of it? I have devised a fantastic list of my own and would like to hear your sentiments too.
Elementary Algebra:
Gelfand's Algebra
Gelfand's Functions & Graphs
Burnside's Theory of Equations
Euler's Analysis of the...
Dear Physics Forum friends,
I am a rising college junior in US with a major in mathematics. I recently noticed a problem in my note-taking skill in the mathematics, both from the textbooks and lectures. When I was a microbiology major, I wrote extensive amount of notes from my books and...
My question is:What is the mathematics necessary for, and which book(or books) i should read to understand graduate-texts like Jackson, Sakurai, Goldstein?? I'm already reading the Boas' book, I'm asking because some people says that for Jackson you need to understand very much of Green...
Here is a quote from a person from another forum (he's not replying to me. I am just a lurker) But since I don't know much about mathematics. I wonder if he's right. Is mathematics an ideology just like Democracy, Communism, etc...?
Here is a quote from a person from another forum (he's not...
Hi I'm a bit confused about some mathematical notation
If i write
f(x)=(2x^2 + 10)^4
And i define
u= 2x^2 +10
u^4 = f(x)
Would it then be correct to write
f(u)= u^4
Or would i get
f(u)= 2(u)^2 +10 = (2(2x^2 +10)+10)^2
Should i define u^4 = f(x) first? Would it then be correct...
I am not sure if this is the right part of the forums to post this, but I was reading the book Surely you're joking Mr Feynman when i reached this part:
This got me thinking. How does one "understand" physics and mathematics? It's certainly more than remembering some formulas. What do you think?
Hey! So I am in a bit of a situation, let me explain:
I did my GCE A Levels (British high school curriculum) and did not do too well in Physics in particular, due to some serious health issues.
I am now in university. I started out taking a biology major and, after continuously dealing...
Dear Physics Forum advisers,
I am a rising college junior (five-years tract) with a major in mathematics and an aspiring mathematician in the fields of theoretical computing and cryptography. I apologize for this sudden interruption but I wrote this email to seek your advice on the impact of...
Homework Statement
Derive the function for the acceleration from this function
v=√(2P/M)(√T)
The answer is √(P/2MT)
I have tried many different attempts but I am still unable to reach this answer.

I am sure the process to get to the answer is a simple one but for some reason I am...
Please forgive me if the question is too ambiguous. I've run into mathematics that I've never dealt with before (I only have encountered very basic probability and statistics). Correct me if I'm wrong, but think I see a bit of topology is used in the second and third sections (though this could...
It's not a homework help question, but it's somewhat related, and doesn't have a better sub-forum: how do you guys/gals remember all the intricacies of mathematics so well that you can help people like me?
I ask this because, like many people, I've done it all before, but when I pour over the...
Hi folks!
Not sure if this is the ideal place to be posting this but looked as good a forum section as any!
I'm starting an MSc entitled "Space Engineering" at the start of October and want to make sure my skills are up to scratch before I start!
In my undergrad studies I just learned the maths...
I am trying to understand the mathematics of quantum eraser experiments, in order to deepen my understanding of what is really happening. The paper I am currently working on is:
"A double-slit quantum eraser" by S. P. Walborn, M. O. Terra Cunha, S. Padua, and C. H. Monken (2001)
in which a...
I'm asking because I'm slow when it comes to mathematics in Physics exams , and I was wondering if Universities cater for people who are slow thinkers by making Physics exams longer than high school exams?
So I am a High school student from Australia and I'm slow when it comes to mathematics (2 Unit) and I'm not doing to well in the tests, I'm getting around 50%.
I was wondering if I should drop to general Maths, which I know isn't recommended for University Physics. The recommended is instead...
I recently graduated from High School (or Sweden's equivalent). I am entering quite a difficult university program studying physics / math in a couple of months.
I am interested in self-studying this summer simply because I find the subjects fascinating, especially the mathematical side of it...
Hi Guys,
I am taking a quantum mechanics course next semester that follows Sakurai's book. I was wondering if there was some mathematics I should study over break in preparation for this course.
I have taken so far:
Calc 1-3
ODEs
PDEs
Linear Algebra
An elementary course in group theory
Ill...
Suggest good books to read in an order for one to gain profundity in the particular subject. This may seem to be a rather baffling task, due to the amount of subjects and it's vastness, but if it is done, it could certainly be extremely useful, especially for people like me who are highly...
I want to learn QM but in a way that i can learn both the deep mathematics, the physical intuition behind QM and the intuition behind the maths behind the QM(not many books have this).
Note that this is my first attempt to learn QM and i will be watching some video lectures online,so i won't be...
goging back to university this year and been a while since i was a school so i need to brush up on my maths skills before. was decent at maths at school basically average the program I am going to study includes a course in IT Mathematics. What books do you guys recommend i should be reading...
Hello, I'm a 25 year old norwegian male currently studying in my spare time. I have to take a few tests (high school level maths and physics being the most relevant ones) so I can attend university in the near future. My goal is to complete a master's degree in computer science or neuroscience...
I use to hate math during high school. However some eight years after graduating and being in the military help with my attitude towards math. I am reviewing a GRE math review book and I haven't been able to put it down. I just learned quadriatic equations and am pursuing into intermediate...
Hi everyone, :)
It's quite interesting to note that there are several research papers written about Mathematics and its relation to Autism. Have any of you done any research on these topics? I find it quite intriguing. :)

Hi everyone,
I'm currently researching graduate schools in mathematics. I would like to go for a PhD. My question is, do I apply directly to the PhD program? Or do I apply to the Master's program and apply for the PhD afterwards? What do people normally do?
Hello, I need some book which covers all the essential mathematics(especially calculus) required for first year Physics.
I am not sure whether I should first study the math rigorously or just concentrate on applications. Any advice is welcome.

47 x 62 = ?
(40+7) x (60 + 2)
40 x 60 + 40 x 2 + 7 x 60 + 7 x 2
2400 + 80 + 420 + 14
2480 + 434

Hi! I'm considering a maters degree in mathematics as the title suggests. Right now I have to decide a specific topic and I've narrowed it down a bit but I'd like some input from people in the field (or getting into the field). I am inclined to research something applied in physics. Here's what...
As part of a personal musicology project I found myself with the mathematical model of a geometry which utilizes the equation
a*(a/b)sin(pi*x)
The only problem with this is that I need to take the integral from -1/2 <= x <= 1/2, and according to Wolfram Alpha no such integral exists. I can...

From the top of a cliff, which runs North-South, the angle of depression of a yacht, 200 m out to sea and due east of the observer is 20 degress. When the observer next looks at the yacht he notices it has sailed 150m parallel to the cliff. Find:
The angle of depression of the yacht from the...
Hi all,
My husband has a Master's degree in Applied Mathematics and we've been job searching for over 6 months now. Only gotten a couple of interviews and sent out hundreds of resumes. I feel like we're doing something wrong because I've always read/heard that people with this major should be...
What is mathematics books need to read to well understand Quantum Field Theory of Weinberg Vol 1,2,3?Please hint me some group theory books?I know not much in representation of group.
Are there any good first year textbooks which cover first year differential (limits, partial derivatives, intro vector calculus), integral calculus, DEs, AND linear algebra - vectors and matrices.
other stuff like complex numbers, infinite series, etc would be a bonus.
As in a single textbook...
I know physicists are not about analogies. For example there is no real analogy for quantum entanglement or super positions in the real world.
But the problem is that we don't really have a theory for everything now, and relativity and quantum fields are not consistent right?
So could it be...
In your opinion, what is the most difficult written text (e.g. a book or a paper) on mathematics?
My candidate: Principia Mathematica by Whitehead and Russell
